Definitely out of my area of expertise, I’m trying to put a band together. Now, I know what I want. I have a bunch of songs that need to get out there. The songs are worship songs for the most part, but range in style from the “traditional” worship, to hip-hop flavored and dance and rock and funk. But I know my own limitations, and so the trick is getting a band that can do the songs justice.
Being surrounded by musicians every day at school, one would think I’d have a plethora of options, but it’s harder than one might thing to get musicians together. However, I’ve managed to pull together a great core of guys for bass, drums and guitar, as well as a sax player. In addition, I’m adding my nieces to the mix, because I believe in coat-tail rights for family. If they will take full advantage of the opportunity, I’m going to let them use my success for their advantage. Plus, these girls are bi-lingual and can help with the Spanish translations of my songs, allowing a more diverse audience. And they are good singers, and decent instrumentalists, allowing us to “fill out” the sound a bit. On top of that, they are cute, and it never hurts to put cute people on stage.
Well, I know that we have a couple of gigs coming up. I can do those on my own if needed, but having all, or part of the band, would be preferable. So we have to get them together to rehearse. We have one 4-5 song gig in just over a week, and another gig the week after that. The songs are all pretty much new, but these guys are good players, so I’m not too concerned.
So, I get charts to everyone, recordings when possible, and notes of what I’m looking for, then pull together a 3-hour rehearsal in the next couple of days… and another one next week. The nieces live about 30 minutes south of school, and don’t yet drive, so we have to coordinate with rides & such.
It’s an adventure in and of itself, but it’s all for the cause… the obsession with music!
